Christchurch visitors and residents who want to visit Kaikoura will soon be able to use a new daily transport service.
Red Travel is launching the Kaikoura Express on 2 October 2017, saying the new service recognises the continued growth of the fully independent traveller (FIT) market within New Zealand and the Canterbury region and the excitement around Kaikoura’s future.
Kaikoura is just 2.5 hours' drive from Christchurch and one of New Zealand's leading eco-tourism destinations.
Red Travel is a division of Christchurch’s iconic Red Bus urban passenger transport company.
“As a business and as people we are passionate about the region, the locals and encouraging visitors back to Kaikoura,” says Red Bus Chief Executive Paul McNoe.
The Kaikoura Express will offer an optional scenic photo shop with seals, quick points of interest en route and the ability to be collected from accommodation zones along with Christchurch Airport.
McNoe says it will complement the company’s existing Akaroa Shuttle service.
The Kaikoura Express will depart Christchurch daily at 8.30am from Rolleston Avenue.
It will leave Kaikoura at 4.30pm from the Kaikoura i-SITE Visitor Information Centre.
The service will include a complimentary a drop-off and pick-up service to Encounter Kaikoura.
“We are very excited by the opportunities this new service offers to our business and the entire Kaikoura community,” says Encounter Kaikoura Business Manager Lynette Buurman.
“The timetable enables passengers the opportunity to participate in the afternoon sailings for the Dolphin Encounter and Albatross Encounter tours.”
Julie Howden, Destination Kaikoura Board Chair, says Destination Kaikoura and the Kaikoura community are grateful for the new service.
“This daily bus return from Christchurch will fill a huge gap in our public transport connection with Christchurch allowing clients the opportunity to do local activities in a day as well as those clients that would like to spend longer in our beautiful town.”
