Big weekend ahead for New Zealand Cup and Show Week

8 November 2013

The first weekend of New Zealand Cup and Show Week is shaping up to be a winner, with four new events set to add to the racing action at Riccarton Park.

The festival starts in style tonight with a free street party in Christchurch’s Re:START mall, from 4pm to late, featuring live music from Op Shop, innovative fashion parades, markets, food stalls and late night shopping.

Tomorrow promises to be an action-packed day with Riccarton Park hosting the Sothys New Zealand Guineas Day to start a week of celebrations for the 150th running of the New Zealand Cup.

Later in the day AMI Stadium is hosting the A-league football match between the Wellington Phoenix and the Perth Glory.

On Sunday 10 November Christchurch’s city centre will play host to the inaugural Urban Assault event – an obstacle course race around the central business district. Whether you’re keen to take part or just watch, this will be a not-to-be-missed event.

And on Monday night, 11 November, Christchurch’s Transitional Cathedral will be turned into a catwalk for another new event – Fashion for a Cure, which will raise funds for the Breast Cancer Research Trust.

Christchurch City Council Marketing and Events Unit Manager, Richard Stokes says this weekend’s line-up of new events shows how much New Zealand Cup and Show Week has evolved over the years.

“Racing and the Canterbury A&P Show will always be at the heart of this festival, but we are incorporating other events because this festival is a celebration of everything that makes this city and this region great. It is about bringing people together and creating opportunities for fun,’’ Mr Stokes says.

“We are really looking forward to seeing A-league football being played in the city again after a three year break, and it’s going to be fun to watch people navigate their way through the central city in the Urban Assault event.’’
