Serving fine food in a modern environment, Universo Brasserie and Bar has become a staple on the Christchurch foodie itinerary. Wayne and Madlen Shaw’s dining experience is the ideal way to wrap up a visit to the Art Gallery.
The restaurant’s high ceilings create grandeur, while the fit out retains the cosy nature of central Christchurch dining. We caught up with co-owner Madlen Shaw about being in the city centre.
Are you doing anything this winter to attract more business?
We have given out 10 percent discount flyers to surrounding businesses and motels and hotels, promoting heavily as a function space. We’ve also got our Winemakers Degustation Dinners during the off season.
What is your go-to lunch spot?
We like to experience new places when we get the chance to go out, trying a different place each time. There’s a lot on offer in our city centre.
Tell us what your ideal day out in the city looks like?
Liming into town with our kids, discovering new spaces in the CBD. Our kids love watching the buskers around town, stopping for lunch at new and different eateries.
What is your best-kept city secret?
Wandering around the amazing Art Gallery.
What sets Christchurch central city apart from other places in the city? Or other cities in New Zealand?
We can walk from the Botanic Gardens, along the river, and into town.
What is your favourite central city spot during winter?
The Canterbury Museum and Art Gallery with our children.
Can you sum up the central city up in one word?
Up and coming.
What would you say to someone who says there is nothing to do in the central city?
I would tell them there are endless opportunities to discover Christchurch. Galleries, eateries, activities getting around on the tram, double decker bus, etc. I would also send them across to the i-Site at the Arts Centre.
Can you finish this sentence: ’I love Christchurch central city because…”
…it’s vibrant and creative.
