The school holidays are over, the weather is cooling down (or is it?), and weekends are more precious than ever.
With Valentine’s Day done and dusted, and the work week finished, it’s time to plan your days off, you weekend warrior.
Ōtautahi Christchurch has a bunch on offer in terms of activities, sporting occasions and festivals to get excited about. Here are our best suggestions:
Friday 15 February
Our national hockey teams take on the world once again at Ngā Puna Wai after a win and a loss against Great Britain on February 8. Taking place at our new sporting hub Ngā Puna Wai, expect boisterous crowds and a sporting festival atmosphere. Tickets available here.
Surely, you’ve smelt the satay smoke wafting from this event already. Track it down at North Hagley Park to discover a foodie heaven. From barbecued meats to vegetarian noodles and fried chicken burgers, this is the eating destination of the weekend. On until Sunday 17 February, from 4pm until 10pm each day, entry is free.
One of the mainstays of national softball competition, teams from around the country are competing at Mizuno Ballpark, in Wainoni, from 14 to 17 February. Get down to the ballpark to support your local Canterbury side as they take on the rest of the country.
Saturday 16 February
With the ICC Cricket World Cup only months away, the importance of these one-day-internationals cannot be overstated. Fresh from victory against India, the BLACKCAPS host Bangladesh on their tour down under. Fresh from a victory on Wednesday, our boys are raring to go, with Hagley Oval once again looking like the place to be this Saturday, gates open 11am. Book tickets here.
The coolest festival to grace Christchurch’s event calendar, Nostalgia is a combination of food, drink, family-friendly vibes and top-notch music. Boasting the likes of CW Stoneking, Holly Arrowsmith and Trinity Roots, as well as food from Ōtautahi’s finest chefs, get down to Ferrymead Heritage Park in Heathcote Valley for a stunner of a day out. Classical music outdoors, coupled with a large-scale fireworks display, all from the familiar surrounds of North Hagley Park. Dreamy. Grab a picnic blanket and dinner from one of the food trucks, or the nearby Noodle Markets, and settle in for this Christchurch tradition. Choreographed fireworks at 9.30pm.
Designed to be the ultimate test for downhill mountain bikers, this event will bring the sport to life for competitors and spectators alike. Held at the world’s only all-season downhill facility, Christchurch Adventure Park, get along to check out the world’s best racers fly down the Port Hills in expert fashion.
Sunday 17 February
Wrapping up the FIH Pro League matches in Christchurch, our Black Sticks men and women take on Pakistan and China at Ngā Puna Wai, our new sporting hub. Come down for world-class hockey action, stick around for the international food trucks. Tickets available here.
Free live music in our stunning Botanic Gardens – on a Sunday – what more could you ask for? Sponsored by Deep South ice cream, the gigs take place on the Archery Lawn. This Sunday, The Ranch Sliders take the stage with bluesy American music. Free entry.
