There’s nothing like a weekend getaway in a new city. But why not experience what it’s like to be a visitor in our own?
There’s a lot to explore in Christchurch; so much has been developed in the central city. There are boutique shops not found anywhere else, iconic hospitality spots that have reopened and many more fantastic food and beverage offerings popping up on a regular basis.
There’s also a great vibe as you walk around and see other people rediscovering the city – visiting the completed anchor projects, like the Margaret Mahy Playground and Avon River Precinct, as well as those that are under construction. Or enjoying the street art and pop up food vendors still operating alongside the new bars, restaurants and cafes.
With all this going on right here in Christchurch, why head elsewhere for a break? See the city through a different lens and rediscover why this is such an awesome place to live.
One of the best things about a staycation is there’s no travel time involved. Every precious minute of your time – and possibly babysitting cover – will be well utilised. In just 24 hours you can get a great taste of what the new Christchurch is all about and feel refreshed to face the world.
Check into a great city hotel
There are some great options when looking at hotels for a night. The recently opened Distinction Hotel is centrally located and provides great views of the city, while the Crowne Plaza overlooks the recently re-opened Victoria Square. Or why not check out the Heritage Christchurch hotel, located in Cathedral Square in a restored Italian Renaissance style building.
Hit the shops
Some of the country’s most popular mainstream brands have flagship stores in the central city, while many bespoke shops have also set up in the heart of our city. It’s easy to spend a few hours checking out the retail offerings all within easy walking distance of each other.
Go for dinner
Trying to narrow it down to just one restaurant will be hard. Lucky, you can always come back in again – even if it’s not for a staycation. There are old favourites that have relocated – think Dux Central, Winnie Bagoes or Fat Eddies; while others are new – such as Original Sin and Amazonita.
Time for cocktails
Mix, sip and dance your way around the city. Fairy lit laneways, local craft breweries, quirky bars and chic urban hangouts create a uniquely Christchurch nightlife experience.
After a great night’s sleep, it’s time to check out one of the awesome breakfast spots in the central city.
Visit the attractions
Why not head along to the Christchurch Art Gallery for a few hours of culture, or visit the beautifully restored Arts Centre and Canterbury Museum. Ride the tram or take a leisurely stroll through the Botanic Gardens, along the new Avon River Corridor or expansive Hagley Park. Take a walking tour of the city’s street art or travel by bike on a guided cycling tour.
Grab a takeaway coffee and head home
There are so many good coffee shops offering great brews. Make sure you grab one to enjoy as you head home.
