Garden Lovers, beware!

Recognised as the Garden City since 1993, Christchurch City has something to please all garden lovers from all around the world. Discover the botanical delights of The Garden City and surrounds!

Suggested Time 3 days

It's time to smell the flowers in numerous gardens around Christchurch & Canterbury. Notice the flora of New Zealand and other parts of the world whilst strolling down to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens; visit Mona Vale and wander around five and a half hectares of gardens and landscaped lawns or meander down to Ohinatahi, ranked as one of New Zealand's best formal gardens.

Day 1

Arriving in the city, head to the Botanic Gardens - an oasis in the heart of the city. Why not jump on a guided Caterpillar Garden Tour around the gardens.

Then, we suggest a visit to Mona Vane Historic Homestead, for an expert tour of the rose garden before enjoying lunch from their tasty summer menu.

For a fresh look at The Garden City, jump on a Segway Tour taking you by two-wheel moped through garden hotspots. Be sure to book a departure time with the Christchurch i-SITE Visitors Centre.

We suggest that you stay at The Classic Villa, centrally located in Worcester Boulevard a stone's throw from the Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park.

Day 2

Ease in to your day with breakfast at your accommodation at The Classic Villa.

Then, why not take a drive over the Port Hills into Governors Bay to Miles Warren's renowned garden Ohinetahi.

On your return to the city, stop hillside to soak up the 360 degree ocean to Alps views over Christchurch.  For the quintessential Garden City experience enjoy lunch at The Curators House, beautifully set amongst the flowers in the botanical gardens.

Then in the afternoon, meander down to the Antigua Boatsheds for a Punt on the Avon River through the gardens - the perfect way to take in the green foliage.

Day 3

Begin your day again with Breakfast at your accommodation, or why not try nearby Le Café and dine in the sunshine or the seclusion of the Art Centre north quadrant.

Then wrap up your escape with a CanNZ half-day tour of private gardens, meeting the gardeners who design and tend these prize winning gardens and allow us to be called the "Garden City", lunch optional.

Remember - you haven't really seen the city in full-bloom until you've visited the Ellerslie International Flower Show. Held in Hagley Park in late summer each year, from 10 to 14 March 2010 - view the Ellerslie International Flower Show itinerary and be sure to book ahead.
