Facts & Figures

With a population of approximately 37000, Selwyn is the second fastest growing district in New Zealand with Queenstown Lakes leading. Selwyn covers an area of 649000 hectares and stretches from the Southern Alps to Lake Ellesmere the largest coastal lake in New Zealand and is bounded by the mighty Waimakariri and Rakaia River's.

It is the natural landscapes that make Selwyn a great place to visit. Travel the Great Alpine Highway and explore the nooks and crannies of Arthurs Pass National Park. On the way, picnic at the Castle Hill limestone rock formations, absorbing their rich Maori history and perhaps even trying your hand - and feet - at some world class bouldering and rock climbing.  Adrenalin junkies will be thrilled by the jet boat rides on the Waimakariri or Rakaia rivers.

Enjoy a trip to Lake Coleridge - the nation's first hydro lake and a famed fishing lake. From there, explore the high country. You'll find everything from skiing, horse treks, farm tours and four-wheel driving to the more sedate pleasures of fishing, high country garden tours and golf, including the challenge of No 10 at Terrace Downs High Country Resort.

And, if mountains aren't really your thing, there's much to do on the flat - wineries, cafes and galleries. You'll discover top artists, award-winning wines and divine country café food, all accompanied by friendly service and a country atmosphere.

We haven't mentioned the highly popular Railtrail cycleway from Christchurch to Little River, which passes through the university town of Lincoln, or the many walkways, such as the Glentunnel Millennium Coal Mine Walk or Waihora's best kept secret, the Harts Creek walkway at Lakeside which takes you to a bird hide in one of the richest wildlife habitats in New Zealand.
