New home for entertainment and sporting events
Work is underway on redeveloping Rugby League Park in
Christchurch into a much-needed venue for entertainment and
sporting events.
Over the next few months a new temporary stadium with a seating
capacity of 17,000 will be built at the park, at a cost of around
$20 million.
The new stadium is scheduled to open in March next year and will
have undercover seating for 8500.
"The earthquakes devastated a number of our sporting venues,
leaving sporting codes and entertainment events without a
home. I am delighted with the initiative to develop Rugby
League Park," says Christchurch mayor Bob Parker.
"This venue will be such an asset to a city getting back on its
feet and it will benefit not only sports fans, but the whole
community."
