Re: START Container Mall is staying for another year, with plans afoot to shift the colourful container mall just down the road.
Re: START is an outdoor retail space consisting of temporary buildings made from shipping containers. Opened in October 2011, Re: START has been steadily growing to approximately 40 retailers, a number of food caravans and a market on the weekend. The shops are full of premium fashion, shoes, food and Kiwi-icon based products.
Land bordered by Cashel and Lichfield streets, Oxford Tce and Plymouth Ln has been allocated for the northern half of Re: START. The southern half can remain for at least several months, with a walkway by the closed Lichfield St parking building joining the two halves.
Re: START was established to keep retailing in the central city and was opened in October 2011 with initial plans to trade onsite for six months. It was built with the help of a $3.3 million interest-free loan from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust.
Since then, it has been extended and hailed as a must-see by international travel guides. "We are pretty excited, we're happy it's all staying in the city." British tourists Tami and Jeff Nunley, shopping at Re: START, described the mall as "cool and clever", and were pleased to hear its future looked more secure.
