Day 1: Christchurch to Porters
A great hassle free way to get to Porters is by shuttle. Arrange a pick
up from your accommodation and be dropped later that day by the
friendly drivers at Alpine Expeditions.
If you prefer a little more independence hire a rental car. If
you are not a confident driver there is no need to stress about
fitting chains or driving up the steep access road of the Mountain,
you can book a free shuttle to take you from the chain fitting area
up to the ski field. *If you are driving always drive with
caution as snow and ice may exist and be hard to see! Follow all
road signs, and please check the weather report for road conditions
prior to travelling.
Now it's time to enjoy the Mountain, so grab your gear and hit
the slopes! Porters have excellent value starter packs, including
ski/board hire, lessons and easy beginner lift access. For the
intermediate skier or boarder, there is a huge variety of runs
accessed by three T-bars. Groomed trails are accessible from top to
bottom. For the more advanced skier and snowboarder, Big Mama is
one of the longest runs in the Southern Hemisphere (620m vertical).
If you want even steeper, then Bluff Face (skiers left) is a 38
degree run. Porters also offer easy backcountry access, but you
must sign in with ski patrol before leaving the ski area
boundaries.
Time to break and refuel with lunch - enjoy the brand new 120
seat café, a great place to grab a bite to eat or enjoy a warming
coffee, or brew in between runs. This scenic café boasts superb
views through the Torlesse Range.
Once you feel rested and recharged it's time to get back out
there and make the most of your afternoon on the slopes!
At the end of the ski day make your way to The Porter
Heights Ski Club Lodge. Enjoy the friendly après ski
atmosphere, right on the mountain. Dinner, bed and breakfast are
all available. Relax and get a good night's sleep in preparation
for another day on the slopes tomorrow.
Day 2: Porters to Christchurch
Grab an early breakfast at your accommodation before another day
on the slopes!
It's a great time to take the opportunity to sample other
activities in the area. If you have a car why not do a half day on
the slopes by grabbing a morning pass? In the afternoon, head down
the mountain to the nearby Waimak Alpine Jet. Once on board you will travel
deep into the foothills of the Southern Alps and experience the
spectacular scenery of the Waimakariri River canyon. Also
experience the thrill of the World famous 360 degree Hamilton jet
spin. Hold on tight!
