Afterdark Adventures

If simply “going to the movies” isn’t enough for you anymore, then perhaps you should look at our recommendations for a good night out in Christchurch.

Alternative cinema

There are movie theatres and cinemas - if you head along to the Deluxe Cinema at The Tannery you will know why. With a handpicked line up of quality movies, wide aisles with genuinely comfortable seats and an incredible range of movie treats like a cheese board and craft beer this experience is sure to cater for even the most discerning movie buff!

It’s showtime

Time for the Ballet? An entertaining musical number? Or maybe some stand-up comedy is more your style? Whatever you are into, settle in for an evening of culture and history at the Isaac Theatre Royal. Grab some tickets online, or at the ticketing desk onsite, and enjoy a night out! Make it a full evening event with dinner down New Regent Street and a nightcap at The Last Word.

Hit the town!

Grab your dancing shoes, put on your fancy clothes and head out for the night at one of the many bars and restaurants you’ll find grouped around the city centre. St Asaph Street for a bit of nightlife and dancing, Poplar Lane for some casual drinks with friends, Victoria Street for something a more sophisticated and not to forget the latest addition to the Christchurch nightlife: The Terrace.

All aboard

If you are looking to do something a little more “Christchurch” inspired, then hop aboard the Restaurant Tram for a unique experience. Enjoy a three course gourmet meal including a welcome drink while you journey around the city on a historic restored tram. Who doesn’t enjoy a little bit of sightseeing over their delicious salmon and venison?!

Red or black

Time to get serious and up the stakes with a trip to the Christchurch Casino. More than just pokie machines and blackjack tables, the casino has 5 restaurants and bars (Chi Kitchen, Monza Sports Bar, The Grand Café, Valley Café and Sixty Six), plus regularly hosts live entertainment and screens live sports games. As a side note - make sure you are dressed smartly, and are over 20 years old!

Immerse yourself in art

The Christchurch Art Gallery is the perfect place to indulge in New Zealand art. Every Wednesday the Art Gallery is open late and offers a free tour starting at 7.15pm. The tour guide shows you the highlights of the collection and fills you in on everything there is to know.

Enjoy the beautiful night sky

The night sky in the Southern Hemisphere is hard to beat! As soon as you leave the city lights behind you, you see the Milky Way and other star constellations with your naked eye. Christchurch AstroTours offer stargazing sessions only a 30-minute drive south of the city. If you're interested in astronomy, then this tour is for you!

 Get your ice skates ready

No matter if you try to impress your date or if you just wanna have fun, the late night sessions at Alpine Ice are a must try! After having shown off your pirouettes and double lutz, take some time for people watching while sipping a hot chocolate - you won't regret it.

A round of pool anyone?

There is nothing better than a round of pool with good friends. The Rockpool Bar has everything you need, a good drinks and food menu, 13 pool tables and live DJ's. Our tip: If you feel peckish after a few rounds of pool, try the pizza - this will boost your energy levels and will keep you going until sunrise!

Climb to new heights

The YMCA Adventure Centre is open until 10pm on weeknights. The climbing wall fits all levels and the team runs climbing classes to improve your technique. Don't worry if you don't have a partner to climb with, there will be someone to team up for sure. If you are more into bouldering, why not trying Uprising Boulder Gym at The Tannery?
