Alpine Pacific Triangle

The Alpine Pacific Triangle is a touring route linking three of Canterbury’s most popular recreational destinations: Hanmer Springs, the alpine thermal village; Waipara Valley, a popular and developing wine region; and Kaikoura with its whale watching. The entire circuit is 370 km/230 miles and can be enjoyed over a few days. The route can be taken in any direction and can be combined with other destinations as part of a greater tour of the South Island. www.hurunui.com

Inland Scenic Route 72
Inland Scenic Route 72 is perfect for the traveller who likes to get off the main highways. It journeys from Amberley, in the north of the Canterbury region and runs parallel to SH1 to Rangiora. It then follows SH72 inland past the Mt Hutt ski fields. On one side of the road are fabulous views of the mountains and on the other are beautiful vistas of the Canterbury plains and rolling farmland. From here it continues to Geraldine and ends at Winchester linking back up with SH1.Pick up a guide for Inland Scenic Route 72 at a Visitor Information Centre

Alpine Traverse Road
This tourist drive begins in Christchurch, threading inland through farmland and upwards past several popular ski areas towards Arthur’s Pass on State Highway 73. Once through the Pass, the road continues seawards to Greymouth to meet the Tasman Sea. If returning east, take a different road to Kaikoura through the Lewis Pass and Hanmer Springs on State Highway 7 and up to Kaikoura via the Alpine Pacific Triangle (APT).

South Canterbury Heritage TrailThe South Canterbury Heritage Trail is made up of three trails - the Bullock Wagon trail from Mount Cook to Timaru, the Strawberry trail from Timaru to Kurow and the Pioneer Trail north of Timaru around the Temuka and Geraldine area.  http://www.heritagetrails.org.nz

Many of the sites depicted on the Canterbury trails show visitors first hand the trading towns where sailing ships and steamers carried supplies and produce servicing developing pastoral communities in the 1850's, the schools and churches, stately homesteads and vintage railways
