Christchurch Backpacking Tips
Here are a couple of helpful tips to ensure you have an awesome time in Christchurch and make the most of this great city!
With peak seasons over summer and winter, make sure you book accommodation in advance to avoid disappointment. It isn't much fun arriving in a new city and having to haul your backpack around town looking for a bed to rest your head.
Use your legs to explore the city centre
Christchurch CBD is flat as a pancake and getting around on your two legs is a breeze. It's a short walk to all the main attractions from Hagley Park to the Transitional Cathedral, and everything in between. With some construction and a few road detours in the city centre, it's often easier to leave the car parked at your accommodation.
Ask a local
We’re a friendly bunch here in Christchurch and locals are more than willing to stop and point you in the right direction - as well as send you on your way with a helpful tip or two.
Venture beyond the CBD
There is plenty to see on the outskirts of the city. From beaches to walks, or the new Christchurch Adventure Park don't miss out on all the fun scattered around the city. Our Metro Bus system will get you most places you need to go, all departing from the Bus Interchange in the heart of the city.
Book a bus or tram tour
The best way to familiarise yourself with the city before you head out on your own is a bus or tram tour. Learn about the history of the city while getting your bearings in your new surroundings.
Departing from Christchurch Airport?
If you're heading out on an early flight, it's important to know that sleeping overnight in Christchurch Airport is not allowed. Jucy Snooze offers basic short term accommodation to tide you over before your early morning flight and is only a 10 minute walk from the terminal.
